The Children of Today

The other day, my daughter and I were driving in the car back from her school. Her music blaring loudly over the radio (as usual). I’m focusing on the road, although, I have to admit to getting a bit lost in my own thoughts. Out of the blue she says to me: “Mum, do you know what is my biggest fear?” Heck, I didn’t see that question coming. I reply with: “No, do tell?”.

“Mum”, “she says, my biggest fear is to not fulfil all my potential in life.” I nearly drove off the road. For context, she’s 14 years old. I respond with: “Oh? My goodness Mikyla, what made you come to that conclusion?” She didn’t really give me a complete answer (I personally blame the grunting noises on the teenager hormones) but somewhere in between the noises she did mention that she was just thinking.

Just thinking?? I was not thinking about the fulfilment of my potential when I was 14 years old! Gosh, I didn’t even learn about a concept of our true potential till much later than life!

This is one of the reasons I think, the earlier in your life you get the amazing opportunity to attend a class called Empower Thyself, the better. It opens up ideas and concepts most people could never dream of! It opens your eyes to the potential we have as humans – the potential we hold inside! Who we are. Why we are here on this specific planet and what our divine purpose is.

The first time I attended this class, my mind was blown by the information taught. Instinctively as a child I always knew that society (teachers, parents, spiritual leaders) did not give us the full picture. I didn’t like the feeling of being lied to. My intuition was strong but I couldn’t find any proof or alternate theories even, that represented something I felt landed closer to the truth. People were (and honestly today is still) too scared to broaden their horizons, or shift their paradigms. People are so scared to be different or to stand out. That is something else that boggled my mind. I didn’t want to be like someone else! I wanted to be me, with my uniqueness, but still accepted for who I am and what I bring to the table! Something that I feel society still struggles with. The constant obsession with creating homogenous groups or carbon copies of our lives in our community drives me bonkers to say the least! We can be so much further as a human race! If we would just learn to embrace diversity!

The children of today are a lot different. You don’t even have to be a parent or a teacher to notice that. In my practice, I often get parents who come to me, looking for alternatives to support their children. I always remind the parents that the work with the children starts with them understanding the basics. This is sometimes hard for parents to hear, nevermind facing it. But it really is up to us to guide the next generation to find their purpose and to fulfill their potential in that calling. I wish more people (not only 14 year olds!) would realise and think deeper about the potential that they hold!
