Not my Cup of Tea

I sometimes get asked about where my inspiration for posts come from. The answer is simple! Every day happenings in my life!

I recently had a conversation with someone about tea cups. They commented that they like their tea cups to be plain, white and all the same. Me on the other hand, like my sets to be miss matched. All shapes and sizes! None of my cups and saucers fit each other and when you put them together, it creates this joyful symphony of “oeh, let me look closer and choose which cup I’m going to use today'”! I love watching my clients stare at the shelf for minutes to:

1. choose their flavour of tea (there are plenty of flavours to choose from!)
2. and secondly their cup and saucer!

It’s almost like it’s an exercise of alchemy on it’s own!

I also find the psychology behind this quite interesting! People who tend to hang out with the same type of people, tend to go for the everything the same cups. People who are a bit more diverse in their circle of friends are more creative, expressive and in generally don’t go for ‘vanilla’.

If I look at my cup and saucer collection it screams diversity. Generally speaking, I am way more accepting of diversity than the average person I hang around with. I taught Diversity Awareness programmes in corporate for years and I’ve heard many stories that will break your heart if you heard it. This made me acutely aware of things that people sometimes say, that is very offensive and hurtful to groups of other people. I find that often those hurtful comments come from people who tend to hang out with only the same, homogenous group of people.

I like my people like I like my cups and my home decor: completely diverse, colourful, mismatched, unique yet when you take a step back to look at the bigger picture, it all comes together and it just works! A beautiful symphony of colours, textures, designs and creativity!

Everyone is my cup of tea – I love the different flavours, diversity, viewpoints, expressions, creativity, intelligence, conversations that makes up diversity! I have learned SO much from people who were completely different to me! It’s expanded my horizons, it made me less judgemental, it enriched my life, it opened my heart and it’s given me a massive network of the most amazing and talented people that I can call on any time in need. And versa visa!

Colourful might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but that in itself is also my cup of tea!
